SPIDER DEVELOPMENT NETWORK ONE PEOPLE, ONE COMMUNITY- Purely A Youth Initiative P.O. BOX 274-50400, BUSIA-(K)
Tel: +254 735 369 516, Email- spiderdevelopment@yahoo.com ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………...…………………………... August- September 2011 INFORMATION OUTLET Spider Development Network is a Self Help Group pioneered by young professionals across Busia and Teso Districts (Busia County). The group wants to re- register as a Community Based Organization. We are located at Tangakona Shopping Centre; this is on Busia – Mumias Highway (17kms from Busia and 47kms from Mumias). Brief History of Spider: In July 2005, the students of Migori TTC come to burry their teacher Mr. Silas Onyango Dindi in Tangakona village, Nambale. The students come back in August the same year to say sorry to the family, Spider Development Network was formed to as a remembrance. The group run successfully till 2006 when it became dormant. In 2009, TACUSA (Tangakona College and University Students Association was launched, six months latter, the name changed to REA KENYA (Rural Education Aid). In 2009, the group (REA KENYA) merged with Spider and became Spider Development Network. A new constitution was written and election done. The Current Coordinator, Benjamin Ong’aria oversaw all this happenings when he was in college at Nairobi Aviation College doing his DIPLOMA in Social Work and Community Development. From there, Spider became the name of the two group combined and currently we as a group privileged to work with the community in collaboration with other partners like Populations Services International (PSI Kenya) among other partners. The group is run by the youths and encourages the community to give youths a chance to manage their affairs not forgetting gender issues. The vision of the group is to see a first class society where all people live above the poverty line and literacy levels are of high standards. Our mission is to have an adequate community where all members take part in development activities. The core objectives are:
 To bring all the community members together for the sake of development
 To empower the community for the sake of development and social networking
Other objectives are:
 To provide a resource centre in the area
 To help vulnerable children get education
 To promote understanding among the youth
 To offer counseling services in the area
 To help eradicate opportunistic infections
 To help the youth in the locality be computer literate
 To empower the society
The group has three committees that help on advisory issues- Executive, Welfare and Sustainability Committees, headed by Benjamin Ong’aria, Esther Olaboro and Karen Nekesa respectively, other than these, the group has the Secretariat, headed by the Coordinator and the Field Officer; Benjamin Ong’aria, and Janet Atieno respectively, the two are professionals in Social Work & Community Development and Disaster Management respectively.

REAKENYA
The group tries to bring the community together so as it can achieve a stable development; Thus the need for Behavior Change Communication. Currently, we have achieved a number of activities and initiatives that we run as a group named before:
1. Behavior Change Process Workshops: On 27- 28 March 2010, we had a Behavior Change Process (BCP) Workshop, we had 15 participates, one Patron, 3 parents and 4 visitors including the Nambale Town- Ship Chief, Madam Marylyn Namenge.
Our second BCP Workshop was on April 22- 23, 2011 at Tangakona Shopping Centre. We had 29 members with a number of marriage people who gave many educative messages. Six people who attended the first workshop come to the second workshop and we were able to observe many changes among these six people. Some of them were able to confess that since they attended our workshop in 2010, a lot has changed in their life. They have been able to start viewing life as a positive journey towards prosperity. Looking at the youths who had sex out of wedlock or before marriage, the percentage has really reduced, we do believe that this has been due to the consistence empowerment that the group has been doing since its formation. If our statistics are to go by, 56% of people contribute in HIV/AIDS spread, thus out of 10,918 people in Nambale Location, 6,113 have either had sex before marriage or have had sex outside wedlock (mpango wa kando);
2. Condom Distribution: We do condom distribution in the community, this we give out more than 15,000 condoms a month. With this, we try to encourage them youths to abstain but those who cannot do that, we have a second option of giving them condoms.
3. Computer Technology Empowerment: Now, we are helping youths in the locality be computer literate, this has attracted a number of youths who come to understand the use of computers. The group started this project because the people were computer illiterate thus missing so many opportunities in the job market. We now have a number who appreciate our efforts and come to the group to teach others.
4. Malaria Prevention- Mbu Nje sis ndani campaign: We are carrying out Malaria Prevention Campaigns in Nambale District- Mbu Nje Sisi Ndani. We use Learning through Listening Approach to encourage community members to use LLITs nets in preventing malaria. This entails visiting 100 groups in a month and appreciating their contributions by giving branded t- shirts, scarves, key holders, bags, and lesos among other materials. This activity we extend to other Districts in the County thus covering the whole County of Busia.
In the last seven months, we have been able to achieve a lot as the community has taken the initiative very positively and a good number of households are sleeping in a treated net. The community normally buys them from the health facilities and even our group where we follow up and establish that majority are using the nets correctly, the free nets have boasted us a lot in our campaigns. On April 25, 2011, we had a Malaria Day Celebration at Okatekok Primary School where we managed to bring up more than one thousand people to participate in the event. Eight Youth Teams participated in the event where a number of Health personnel from surrounding dispensaries attended.
5. Radio Station: Spider is also trying to see the logistics behind running a radio station in Busia County. This is a bit technical, but we keep on struggling towards our dreams. With a radio station, we believe that we shall be able to reach to a more population in the locality

6. Poultry Project: We have put up a Poultry Farm in Tangakona where we want to encourage the whole community to participate in development initiatives. This we tend to manage by our own after which we shall look for another project to invest on. This is managed by The Sustainability Committee, Be encouraged to come and visit. The Ministry of Agriculture has played a big role in given technical advice on the project.
7. Merry Go Round: As a way of helping members directly and knowing their homes, we are having a Merry- Go- Round in the group, we visit members’ homes and give them some cash to improve their lives, and this is managed by the Welfare Committee. The Merry Go Round has been able to bide members together as they feel relaxed from the office mood.

LETTING GO

letting Go

by Lillian Achieng on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 8:34pm
This is beautiful. Read it to the end...the message is awesome!!!

There are people who can walk away from you.

And hear me when I tell you this! When people can walk away from you: let them walk. I don't want you to try to talk another person into staying with you, loving you, calling you, caring about you, coming to see you, staying attached to you. I mean hang up the phone.

When people can walk away from you let them walk. Your destiny is never tied to anybody that left.

The bible said that, they came out from us that it might be ma de manifest that they were not for us. For had they been of us, no doubt they would have continued with us. [1 John 2:19]

People leave you because they are not joined to you. And if they are not joined to you, you can't make them stay.

Let them go.

And it doesn't mean that they are a bad person it just means that their part in the story is over. And you've got to know when people's part in your story is over so that you don't keep trying to raise the dead.. You've got to know when it's dead.

You've got to know when it's over. Let me tell you something.. I've got the gift of good-bye. It's the tenth spiritual gift, I believe in good-bye.. It's not that I'm hateful, it's that I'm faithful, and I know whatever God means for me to have He'll give it to me. And if it takes too much sweat I don't need it. Stop begging people to stay.

Let them go!!

If you are holding on to something that doesn't belong to you and was never intended for your life, then you need to......

LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to past hurts and pains ........

LET IT GO!!!

If someone can't treat you right, love you back, and see your worth......

LET IT GO!!!

If someone has angered you.

LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to some thoughts of evil and revenge....

LET IT GO!!!

If you are involved in a wrong relationship or addiction... ..

LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to a job that no longer meets your needs or talents

LET IT GO!!!

If you have a bad attitude .... ...

LET IT GO!!!

If you keep judging others to make yourself feel better.....

LET IT GO!!!

If you're stuck in the past and God is trying to take you to a new level in Him.........

LET IT GO!!!

If you are struggling with the healing of a broken relationship. ....

LET IT GO!!!

If you keep trying to help someone who won't even try to help themselves.. ....

LET IT GO!!!

If you're feeling depressed and stressed .............

LET IT GO!!!

If there is a particular situation that you are so used to handling yourself and God is saying 'take your hands off of it,' then you need to......

LET IT GO!!!

'The Battle is the Lord's!'
So lets just say our lords prayer

The Lords Prayer

Our Father, who are in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For Thy is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, forever.

Amen.

Next, send this message to everyone you know. In a while, more people will have prayed for you and you would have obtained a lot of people praying for others!

Next, stop and think and appreciate God's power in your life, for doing what you know is pleasing to Him.

'Yes, I love my God. He is my fountain of Life and My Savior.

He Keeps me going day and night. Without Him, I am no one. But with Him, I can do everything, Christ is my strength.' This is a simple test.

If you love God and you are not ashamed of all the great things that He has done for you, share this with everyone you know.

God loves you and watches over you everyday.

Busia County is cosmopolitan society.

To start with, Busia County is cosmopolitan society. Two larger communities viz; of the Luhya and Iteso, and other minor communities. It ought to be noted that the utilitarian and egalitarian nature of governance is premised on the protection of the weaker members in society. In contemporary society weakness is seen interms of culture, tribe or tribal affiliation, religion etc. To this extent, we ought to consider the diversity interms of community and elect leaders who will work towards not to remove the diversity build them in social cohesion.
Secondly, another important consideration is that government has an economic function. Government should strive at providing the resources necessary for the attainment of the objective of survival and self preservation which is inherent in every man.

In the light of the foregoing and the spirit of the 2010 constitution, i come to the logical conclusion that Hon. Ababu Namwamba and Hon. Sospeter Ojaamong are the best bet for senator and governor respectively. The two have exhibited qualities of representative inherent in the representative and republican nature of governance. Their national and or constituency level record speaks for themselves. Again they are youths.

I pray that we the people of Busia are the bastion of success and the conscience of our beloved county.

Regards, silas.

I BELIEVE I CAN BE... LONE FELIX

I am a twenty year old Law student from Busia, I grew up in Busia, Nambale to be specific. Today, I look back and mourn at the wasted potential the county has lost. When 2012 comes and by chance age allows me to vie for any of the following, Nambale seat, Governor or Senator I will for:

...I BELIEVE I CAN BE.....

My Photo

Many question my motivation and conviction, many question the timing of my ambition, many question the reality in my sentiments and many doubt the practicability of the same.

Their concerns are valid, for indeed, Kenya is not accustomed to a large scale of ambitions. There have been forces that established themselves as ultimate Kingmakers; wealth and affluence, ethnicity and regionalism, convenience and compromise.

But there is a conviction within me, a conviction that gives me faith to believe that these traditional Lords ought to be negated. That conviction tells me that Kenya can rise above these retrogressive chains, that Lone can be judged by the extent of his will and not the massiveness of his wealth.

This faith, Confirms to me, that such a great nation is ripe and can rebel against conservatism for change.

Yes, I may lack means but I have a will, I may lack age but I have the ability, I may lack superficial qualifications, but I have one thing, A LOVE FOR A BETTER KENYA.

These are personal views and we have no link to them,

AIDS DRUGS FACT FILE...........

What were the first anti-HIV drugs?
The first drugs to be developed to combat HIV were AZT (also called zidovudine or Retrovir), ddI (didanosine or Videx) and ddC (zalcitabine or Hivid). These all belong to a group of drugs called nucleoside analogues or reverse transcriptase inhibitors.
They inhibit the action of an enzyme called reverse transcriptase which enables HIV to spread, leading to a breakdown of the patient's immune system.
AZT taken alone has been shown to reduce HIV transmission from woman to baby.
Women who avoid breastfeeding and take AZT are about 66% less likely to pass on the virus to their child.

Using combinations of drugs
Scientists noticed that people using more than one of the drugs were less likely to develop Aids, the syndrome of diseases caused when HIV has destroyed the immune system. They were therefore more likely to live longer.
In the UK, five nucleoside analogues have been licensed. In addition to AZT, ddI and ddC, doctors can also prescribe 3TC (lamivudine or Epivir) and d4T (stavudine or Zerit).
Some patients are also taking part in trials for another nuceloside analogue drug called abacavir.
Another group of drugs which stops the reverse transcriptase enzyme from working is non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors or NNRTIs for short.
One, nevirapine, has been licensed in the US and is available in the UK. Two others are being tested.
The drugs are particularly effective for people who have not had any other anti-HIV drugs before, but they have to be taken with at least two nucleoside analogues.

Other anti-HIV drugs
There are three licensed drugs in Europe which target another enzyme which helps HIV to spread.
They are usually used in combination with nucleoside analogues. They are: indinavir (sold as Crixivan), ritonavir (trade name Norvir) and saquinavir (sold as Invirase).
Using a protease inhibitor in combination with other anti-HIV drugs can reduce the progress of HIV and the risk of death by 50% in people whose immune systems have been severely compromised. The benefits for those whose immune systems have been so severely attacked by HIV is not as noticeable.
However, combinations that contain indinavir or ritonavir can reduce the virus to almost undetectable levels in many people with HIV.
Scientists are creating more protease inhibitors.

Resistance
When HIV reproduces, it can produce different strains which may be resistant to some drugs.
In some cases, the new strains can be resistant not just to one drug, but to other related drugs.
The mutation of HIV is one of the main reasons that a particular combination of drugs can lose effectiveness over time.
People are advised to change their combination of drugs if it becomes less successful at fighting HIV.
Drug-resistant HIV can be transmitted from person to person through body fluids - the same way as ordinary HIV.

Taking combination therapy
Taking the wrong dose of anti-HIV drugs or the wrong combination can be more dangerous in the long run that not taking the drugs at all.
This is because wrongly treated HIV can reproduce at very high rates and produce resistant strains very quickly.
Taking combination therapy can be very disruptive to daily life.
The drugs have to be taken at the right time in the right doses. Some have to be taken on an empty stomach and others on a full stomach.
It is vital that patients do not forget to take their pills as, if the level of drugs in the bloodstream drops too low, HIV may develop resistance to them.
The side effects associated with the different anti-HIV drugs vary according to the drug and the individual taking them. They can include anaemia.
Because of the difficulties surrounding combination therapy, some HIV organisations have developed services for helping people take their medicine and for giving them more information about the different drugs.

Expense
The drugs are very expensive, which means it is difficult for governments in developing countries to pay for them.
Combination therapy is estimated to cost around $950 per month.
At the end of last year, some firms involved in manufaturing drugs used in combination therapy reduced their prices for developing countries.
For example, in Uganda, the cost of combination therapy was reduced to around $500 per month.
However, this is still well out of the reach of most Ugandans. Even middle income Ugandans are only estimated to earn around $400 a month.
